2016-17 is a Season of Discovery!

The Center for the Performing Arts has something to discover season after season. Share your discoveries at the Center’s welcome table in the lobby and via social media by using #MyDiscovery

Ashley Ulbricht, President of The Scene, shared her #MyDiscovery story with us. See more below and stay tuned all season to hear what people are discovering at the Center!

How have you been involved with the Center for the Performing Arts and The Scene, our young professionals group?
After I moved to Carmel, Indiana from South Bend, Indiana, I became involved with The Scene as a Leadership Council member in the fall of 2012. Throughout the 2014-2015 season I became the Events Chair and organized Scene events to complement Center performances.  For example, in connection with the TAO Drummers Performance, the Scene partnered with the Japanese Community to showcase the art of Japanese calligraphy and origami and host a traditional tea and sake tasting experience for Scene members and guests.

As a member on the Center’s Board, I sit on the Development Committee and Programming Committee and provide input on strategies to involve young professionals while supporting the Center’s mission to welcome, engage, inspire and transform.

As a young professional, why do you think it is important to be involved with the arts in our community?
Music is a bonding experience that should be enjoyed and shared with friends.  As young professionals, it is our responsibility to engage and create the next generation of philanthropists and arts patrons.  Fine arts, music, and theater are an acquired taste to individuals who have not been exposed to it. Sharing musical or arts experience together can strengthen professional relationships, broaden horizons, and create common bonds throughout our community.

What have you discovered at the Center through The Scene?
When you are experiencing a performance at the Center, your own ears and body interact with the concert hall in a way that is acoustically richer than any interaction you could ever have with music played through your ear buds.  Each concert in the Palladium is a once in a lifetime experience that should be shared.  The Scene has the unique opportunity to engage young professionals to experience unique live performances in a concert hall, rather than the ordinary sound-designed downtown club, outside concert venue or arena.

What is your favorite memory here at the Center?

Almost every performance and experience at the Center is a favorite!  While each performance is unique and creates a new memory, I recently enjoyed the Center’s New Year’s Eve event.  This event provided entertainment for all ages to experience, and you could tailor the evening to suit your style. It was amazing to watch patrons from every age group, ethnic background, and socioeconomic status ringing in the New Year together!

How have you been most inspired while on campus at the Center?
The Center is a world class performance venue that is literally in my backyard.  Regardless of why I am on the Center’s campus (for an event, performance, board meeting, attending the farmer’s market on the Center’s Green, or walking my dog around the beautiful grounds on the Monon), the special feeling I attain when I arrive is awe-inspiring.  The Center has truly become the “center” of the Carmel community and has set the standard for performing arts venues in central Indiana, throughout the entire State, the Midwest, and arguably the Nation. The Campus inspires me to be an ambassador for its mission, by introducing as many young professionals as I can to its “culture” and sense of “community.”

What would you invite your friends to discover for themselves?
If you have not been to the Palladium, Tarkington, or Studio Theater, I invite you to pick any performance and attend.  We offer many music genres, children’s outreach programs, and first rate theater performances in a setting that is both intimate and welcoming to all.  You won’t be disappointed!

How can other young professionals get involved with The Scene?
Young professionals can launch their involvement with the Center and the Scene by purchasing a membership for $45 and attending our next event.  In addition to many exciting “perks” throughout the Season, the cost of membership includes up to a 40% discount to any Center Presents show and a free ticket to a performance of your choice.  We strive to offer a variety of music events, networking opportunities, and cultural experiences.  At the least, young professionals should sign up for our e-newsletter to keep informed of the Scene’s next event and activities happening around the Center.
