SONGBOOK ACADEMY AND COMPETITION LAUNCHES SEARCH FOR 2012

INDIANAPOLIS – The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative hosts the only high school vocal academy and competition in the U.S. dedicated solely to the music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-twentieth century. The Great American Songbook Vocal Academy and Competition is now accepting student applications. The competition is June 12-16, 2012.

“Because of the overwhelming success of the competition in its first two years, we are excited to announce that the program is expanding to include states beyond the Midwest for eligibility,” said Doris Anne Sadler, Executive Director of the Michael Feinstein Initiative.

Students from across the country will participate in a competitive audition process for the chance to attend 2-day regional music academies and competitions. Winners from these regional academies will travel to the Indianapolis area for a four-day comprehensive “boot-camp” June 12 -16, on interpreting and performing the music of the Great American Songbook. Led by local and national celebrity performers and professionals, workshops will cover topics ranging from breathing and microphone techniques to one-on-one coaching and master-classes. The classes are intended to prepare finalists for the Final Competition performance at the Palladium in Carmel, IN on June 16, 2012, when each student performs two songs and the top three winners will be announced.

The first place winner wins $3000 and the chance of a lifetime: a trip to sing in New York City with five-time Grammy Award nominee, world-renowned performer and recording artist, and co-founder of the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative, Michael Feinstein.

“Through this competition, we are reaching a new generation to teach this music and the American history that inspired and influenced these composers,” said Michael Feinstein, who lends his time and expertise to this important program. The competition has proven to be one of the Michael Feinstein Initiative’s most exciting education programs.

Second place will receive $2000 and third place will receive $1500 towards continuing music education.

Regional finalists for the 2012 competition will be selected from the following eligible states: Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Wisconsin and Iowa.

Interested students can apply at www.feinsteininitiative.org

The mission of the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative is to bring the music of the Great American Songbook to our young people today and to preserve it for the generations to come.
